During the last Ice Age, the entire Ötztal valley was covered by a massive glacier. As the glaciers melted, the rock faces lost the counterpressure holding them in place. The result: several gigantic rockslides. In some places, cracks and crevices opened up in the mountains. These jagged rock fissures – some bridged by wedged boulders – are truly awe-inspiring: about 50 meters long, 30 meters deep, and up to 3 meters wide. Although once dangerous chasms, they are now well secured with larch fences and can be safely admired thanks to two viewing bridges. Much like the Kanzel viewpoint, there are several hiking trails in the area. The easiest way to reach the fissure is from a turn-off along the Piburger Landesstraße.
