The castle, whose oldest walls were constructed from Romanesque ashlar stones, is considered the secular nucleus of the city of Hartberg.
As a border region, Eastern Styria was subject to enemy attacks for centuries. In 1128, Hartberg was established as a palatial city by the Styrian margraves from the Traungau dynasty. Around 1130, the construction of the castle began. In 1166, the assembly of nobility took place here, deciding on the erection of a ring of castles against Hungary. These fortified castles, which often became grand palaces, each tell their own personal story.
At the highest point of the medieval city once stood the Traungau castle, now home to Schloss Hartberg. In the 16th and 17th centuries, it was rebuilt and expanded in the Renaissance style, accented with a contemporary extension in the 21st century and surrounded by a romantic park, finely reflecting the course of history.
