The mighty Bernkogel, on the western flank of the valley, is a mountain only for experienced hikers. From the trail head for hikers in Unterberg, you will follow the lovingly designed Bärenweg through forest to the Amoseralm, then continue via a forestry lane to the Amoserhochalm. Passing a strikingly large field of rubble and scree, you will traverse the northern flank and ascend via the west side of the Bernkogel up to the summit. Due to the slightly alkaline soil here, you will encounter exceptionally diverse flora on the Bernkogel. The strenuous effort you put into the hike up will be rewarded by magnificent views of the Northern Limestone Alps, the Hochkönig Massif, the Salzach River Valley as well as Gastein Valley itself.
