Drachenhöhle

972m

The Dragon Cave is a site of prehistoric significance. Through the impressive portal, one enters the mountain, located about 500 meters above Mixnitz on the western slope of Röthelstein. Around 50,000 years ago, the Dragon Cave served as a refuge for humans from bears or wolves. Hike/Tour: The hike to the official entrance of the cave takes about 1.5 hours. The increasingly steep path is worth it to learn about the origin of the "Dragon Legend." The cave got its name from fossil bone findings of the extinct cave bear. Trained cave guides accompany tour participants through the cave, protected as a natural monument. It is one of the most significant bat habitats in Austria.

For ecological reasons, visiting the cave is only permitted within guided tours. Guided tours take place from May to October.
