Between Vorau and the East Styrian river Lafnitz, you will find Aichberg Castle, which was once part of a medieval ring of castles designed to defend the eastern border of the realm.
Aichberg Castle towers black over the village of Eichberg and the gentle hills of Eastern Styria. It appears imposing and slightly menacing. Castle owner Cajetan Gril du Guern insists this is unintentional. During renovation works, it was revealed that this must have been the original facade color. Anthracite gray was likely the fashionable color for castles in the 17th century. And because he had no desire to replace the many decaying Baroque doors, he simply asked artists to decorate them. Aichberg Castle is a member of the Castle Road.
