Lake Achensee is surrounded by two mountain ranges, whose appearances are unique in themselves. The Rofan and Karwendel mountains boast 500 kilometres of marked and well maintained hiking trails, providing the best conditions to enjoy an unforgettable hiking holiday.

The Rofan mountains to the east of Lake Achensee are rugged and gentle at the same time. On the high plateau, gentle paths climb over lush meadows to the peaks whose rock faces fall away precipitously on the other side. The Karwendel mountains which lie to the west provide a special habitat for the wildlife and have the highest population of golden eagles in the Alps. The Nature Park Karwendel is the largest nature reserve in the Northern Alps and a Tirolean Nature Park. The flora and fauna in this sensitive environment are conservation protected, which means visitors get to enjoy experiences in unspoilt natural surroundings.

The region boasts 500 kilometres of well maintained and signposted hiking trails, ranging from family jaunts and easy strolls into the Nature Park Karwendel to challenging summit victories. The Rofan cable car and Karwendel cable car transport visitors effortlessly up the mountain, making it possible for everybody to enjoy an easy-going mountain adventure without enduring the climb.
