Remstal-Radweg Stage 4: from Schwäbisch Gmünd to the source of the Rems and on to Aalen - Hiking tour

Remstal-Radweg Stage 4: from Schwäbisch Gmünd to the source of the Rems and on to Aalen

biking

The route starts in Schwäbisch Gmünd, close to the train station. First, the cycle path leads through the flower-filled Remspark park into the old town. It is worth taking a short detour via the market square to see the historic half-timbered houses, the Heilig-Kreuz-Münster cathedral, and St. John's Church with its striking bell tower, the town's landmark.

Passing the university and through the industrial park, the trail leaves the city and follows the Rems River through woods and fields to the district of Hussenhofen. There, on the newly designed banks of the Rems, it's time for a break.

In the district of Zimmern, the Krone restaurant invites you to take your next break with good regional cuisine, a winter garden, and outdoor seating.

Outside Zimmern, the cycle path winds its way through the scenic landscape between the Rems and the mill canal until it soon reaches Böbingen, guided by the B 29. The municipality offers cyclists a beautiful barbecue area in the countryside, right on the Rems, and accompanies them to the village with a row of impressive wooden figures. “Art on the adventure cycle path” is the motto of the section in the municipality of Böbingen. Many carvings can be admired along the way.

You pass through Böbingen on the outskirts of town, where a carved figure waves goodbye. Now you continue on the bike path through a hilly, lovely landscape with meadows and pastures. Large wooden picture frames catch your eye along the way. It's worth stopping here. Nature provides the motifs, such as the silhouette of the three Kaiserberge mountains.

The route rolls briskly downhill, over the bridge of the Mögglingen bypass, which was opened to traffic in April 2019 after three years of construction. The Remstal Cycle Route has also been relocated and has been open to cyclists on new asphalt since May 2019.

In the center of Mögglingen, the imposing St. Peter and Paul Church immediately catches the eye, housing art treasures of national importance inside. Cyclists can relax and unwind on the lovingly designed church square. Quotes from famous poets and philosophers, a fountain, chimes, and a “book cabinet” provide food for the soul and spirit. If you want to buy food, cycle to the main road, where you will find a butcher's, restaurants, and snack bars.

The landscape between Mögglingen and Essingen is characterized by a wide plain with meadows and pastures. Here, nature takes center stage; even agriculture is practiced in harmony with nature. Cattle graze peacefully in the pastures until Essingen is soon reached. If you have some time to spare, you can take a detour to the source of the Rems.

At the edge of town, a newly built beer garden beckons, and the oil mill offers overnight stays in the “Rems Lodges,” unique wooden huts that are second to none.

On the gravel Remsquellenweg trail, cyclists are accompanied by a large wooden marble run and an agility course, both newly built for the garden show. After two kilometers, you reach the source of the Rems. Enclosed between three large stone blocks, the Rems emerges and then flows until it joins the Neckar after an 80-kilometer journey.

Those who do not go to the source of the Rems cross a small bridge over the Rems at the entrance to Essingen and arrive at the castle park, which has been artfully planted for the garden show.

It is now not far to the Limes town of Aalen, the destination for this stage. A visit to the newly opened Limes Museum is highly recommended. Numerous cafés and restaurants await guests in the pedestrian zone.
