Long-distance cycle route where the water is a constant companion
The Danube-Lake Constance Cycle Route leads from Ulm on the Danube down to the shores of Lake Constance and links two well-known long-distance cycle routes — the Danube Cycle Path and the Lake Constance Cycle Path. Ulm Minster, which has the highest church tower in the world, is the first attraction on the route.
The route then leads onwards in the direction of Biberach, where the beautiful market square invites you to rest for a while. A steep ascent follows, which is rewarded with a fantastic view and a rapid descent through meadows and forest landscapes.
The Kneipp spa town of Bad Waldsee attracts people with its beautiful old town that lies between two small lakes. A visit to the Waldsee-Therme thermal baths will perk up tired cyclists’ legs again.
After a trip through the romantic Wolfegger Ach valley, the ‘Bauernhaus-Museum Allgäu-Oberschwaben Wolfegg’ farmhouse museum invites you to visit. Villages, flower meadows and forest clearings line the way to Kißlegg, which is picturesquely situated on the banks of Lake Zell. The town centre, with its impressive New Kißlegg Palace (‘Neue Schloss Kißlegg’) is just as worth seeing as the historic old town of Wangen, which is the next leg’s destination.
This is where the last part of the route begins with an exhilarating descent down to Lake Constance with a magnificent Alpine panorama, through nature reserves and expansive apple and cherry orchards and hop plantations to Kressbronn on Lake Constance.
Strength is required throughout the entire route, but there are lots of opportunities for relaxing in between — natural bathing lakes, spa towns and beneficial thermal baths, such as Jordanbad near Biberach or the Waldsee-Therme thermal baths invite you to take a relaxing break.
But there are also a number of options for further stops along the route — museums, historic old towns with medieval centres and the Upper Swabian Baroque Route offer cultural variety. You can also spend some particularly enjoyable hours in the inns and beer gardens with their regional specialties and traditionally brewed beer.
