The tour starts just above the Annencafe, where you can park your car. A forest path leads you up to the Rastötzenalm, where the climb up to the Gamskarkogel begins. Once you reach the Rauchkogelscharte, it is a good idea to take a short diversions to the right to the Rauchkogel before conquering the last few metres to the summit. At 2,467 metres, the Gamskarkogel is the highest grass mountain in the Alps. There is a mountain hut right on the summit, built in 1828, making it the oldest mountain hut in the Alps. The Styrian hereditary prince Archduke Johann had the hut built and was himself a welcome regular guest.
