The numerous alpine pastures are the hallmark of the Sölk. Cattle and horses are more likely to be found on the pasture floors, while sheep climb up to the peak regions. The managed alpine huts represent hospitality and serve as a base for many hikes. Often, milk is still processed up here, and the traditional Styrian cheese is also produced. It is no longer a given that livestock is driven up to the alpine pastures. However, the old cultural landscape also serves as a habitat for many wild animals, making it particularly attractive for visitors, and it can also help mitigate environmental disasters.
