Im Markus-Semmler-Stolln wurde 1912 das bis dahin stärkste natürliche Radonwasser der Welt, die spätere Bismarckquelle, entdeckt. In Bad Schlema werden seit über 100 Jahren Radonkuren zur Schmerzlinderung durchgeführt. Da Radon beim Zerfall von Uran entsteht, kann dem Metall nicht nur eine gesundheitsgefährdende, sondern auch eine heilende Wirkung nachgesagt werden. Entscheidend ist die Dosierung.
