The starting point is the National Park House at the car park in Sportgastein. From there, a forest road leads to the head of the valley, from where a marked trail leads to the Hagener Hütte. From the Mallnitzer Tauern, take the path south across alpine pastures to the Jamnig Alm. Continue downhill via the footpath to the Mallnitztal valley. Once on the valley floor, you reach the village of Mallnitz, located south of the Tauern tunnel, via the road. Return through the Tauern lock from Mallnitz to Böckstein.
