This trail run kicks off just above Annencafé, where parking is available. The route immediately ascends through the forest on a steep climb to the Rastötzenalm â a perfect warm-up to get the legs fired up. The trail then veers left, passing alpine huts before making a direct push toward Schmalzscharte.
Historically, this pass was used to transport goods such as lard from one valley to another â today, itâs a rewarding challenge for trail runners with an appreciation for history. From here, the real adventure begins: a spectacular ridge run over Frauenkogel, which belongs to the GroÃarl mountain range and offers breathtaking views into the neighboring valley. The final push leads up to Gamskarkogel.
At 2,467 m, Gamskarkogel is the highest grass-covered peak in the Alps. Perched at the summit is a mountain hut built in 1828, making it the oldest refuge in the Alps â a favorite spot of Archduke Johann of Styria. After a brief pause to take in the panoramic views, the run continues with a fast and thrilling downhill back to the valley. A trail run packed with history, steep climbs, and epic scenery!
