From the car park, you first pass the beautifully situated Kasererhöfe farms into the valley of the same name. Right from the beginning of the tour, you can see the actual destination, the Kleiner Kaserer, which towers mightily at the end of the valley. After a good hour's walk, you finally reach the Kasererwinkel. Here the forest path slowly turns into a steep path and begins to get steeper and steeper. The path winds its way up the left side of the valley to the Kasererschartl, past the walls of the Frauenwand and often past numerous chamois. When you reach the Schartl, the view of the surrounding mountains opens up for the first time, as well as Hintertux, which seems to be very close. The route continues along the northern ridge, which is initially quite steep on a smaller ridge and later somewhat flatter, but also exposed, to the summit. The higher you get, the more you see of the (still) quite large Hintertux glacier and the peaks of the Tux main ridge. Once you reach the summit, you can marvel at the wild, beautifully shaped Olperer massif with its steep walls, which continues the mountain range not far away. Once you have had your fill of the impressive panorama at the summit, the descent path leads down via the west ridge. This section of the tour is neither marked nor shown on the map, and there are also a few climbing spots to overcome - but for any somewhat experienced mountaineer, these hurdles should be easily manageable. After some time downhill between the Kaserer and Wildlahn valleys, you reach the Kleegrubenscharte, which lies directly below the two rock pyramids of the Schober peaks. Turn right here and follow the well-trodden path (part of the Peter Habeler Runde) back to the Kaserer Valley, where the circle closes again at the Kasererwinkel and only the path back along the forest road to the starting point awaits you.
ROUTE DESCRIPTION From the car park (Obern), first follow a narrow road in a south-easterly direction to the hamlet of Kasern. Shortly after the Alpengasthof Kasern, near three beautifully situated alpine huts, a forest path with the No. 324 leads further into the Kaserertal valley. After about half an hour you reach a signpost before a bridge, here you should take the right-hand path and continue along the valley floor. Another half an hour later you finally reach the Kasererwinkel, where the wide forest road ends and turns into a path that leads up over stony terrain to the Peter-Habeler Runde trail. As soon as you reach the circular trail, you also come to a signpost, where you turn left and follow the trail with the number 527, which winds its way up quite steeply, to the Kasererschartl. Although there is also a signpost at the Schartl, there is no indication anywhere of the further route to the small Kaserer - this is not marked, but is easy to find with a little experience. To do this, turn right at the Schartl and follow the northern ridge (Kaserergrat) up to the summit. The narrow, trodden path is quite steep, so the remaining 600 metres of altitude can be covered quite quickly. Once the wonderful panorama at the summit has been sufficiently enjoyed, the descent now leads down via the west ridge (between the Kaserer and Wildlahn valleys). Finding the way is a little more difficult here. Twice there are also easier climbing sections (II). Here you should always keep to the ridge as much as possible and not descend into the one or other valley flank, then you will also reach the Kleegrubenscharte without any problems. From there, head in a north-easterly direction following the Peter Habeler Runde back down to the Kaserertal and then via the forest path to the starting point.
TIP OF THE AUTHOR In the area of the ascent to the Frauenwand from the Kasererwinkel, you can often observe and marvel at large flocks of chamois if you keep quiet.
