The Fulda bike path runs over 247 kilometers from the Fulda springs on the 950 m high Wasserkuppe in the Rhön to the Weser valley and on to Bad Karlshafen. It passes the three-river-town of Hann. Münden, where "Fulda und Werra unite and give up their names".
The Fulda bike path leads you, for about 130 kilometers, through the northern part of Hesse; this is the area that the famous brothers Grimm called home. Romantic half-timbered towns such as Bad Hersfeld, Rotenburg on the Fulda, Melsungen and the Documenta-town of Kassel meander along the Fulda and invite you in for a stopover - (Documenta, the contemporary art exhibition in Germany).
Although it is a river bike path, you may encounter some gentle hills on the R1. The flattest sections are Gersfeld – Fulda and Kassel – Hann. Münden. You will find 85% of the trail to be paved, with the remaining route travelling on well-traveled compressed gravel lanes. In some places, the route runs through small to moderately busy city connectors, otherwise the route is almost entirely away from car traffic.
